Eyes on God

Hear me, Lord, and answer me,
    for I am poor and needy.
Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
    save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God; have mercy on me, Lord,
    for I call to you all day long.
Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
    for I put my trust in you.

You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
    abounding in love to all who call to you.
Hear my prayer, Lord;
    listen to my cry for mercy.
When I am in distress, I call to you,
    because you answer me.

—Psalm 86:1-7

  1. This is one of the most beautiful prayers in the bible. I do a lot of volunteer work with homeless families. And, one of the things we ask of our church volunteers is not to witness by word, only by deed. We actually need not make that requirement, as our people in need are witnessing by their faith to those helping them. What we have found is the impoverished among us sometimes only have their faith. This goes back to Dr. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley book, “The Rich and the Rest of Us.” There ae some who believe those in poverty are there because they are less virtuous. What they dispel in their book and what we have seen is that is not true. Poverty is the lack of money, period. Thanks for the great prayer and letting me wax on, BTG

  2. You are welcome Anna. If you don’t have time to read the book, I wrote two posts last October about it – the first one was on misconceptions about poverty and the second one was on their suggestions. Would love your thoughts. Also, the post that gets the most attention is called “Les Miserables and Social Injustice.” I wrote that shortly after the movie aired, so around January or February of this year. Take care, BTG
